This piece will also look at the economic and cultural dynamics of Black fashion through the eyes of Thorstein Veblen’s theory of consumerism. This will cover how social status has traditionally been conveyed through luxury clothes as well as how Black designers and users have reinterpreted what it means to “dress rich.” This intersection of craft, culture, and class will demonstrate how Black fashion, by setting trends rather than just following them, redefines what society views as desirable.
